Diabetes Treatment in Garden Grove, CA

Most of this page is about type 2 diabetes support beside the physician who manages your glucose. Type 1 medication is entirely the endocrinologist's. Nutrition, strength, and labs can sit next to that care. You should not stop metformin, insulin, or glucose monitoring because of anything you read here. For patients coming from Garden Grove, the office is about 22 miles away, 35–50 minutes, by the 22 east to the 55 south, then toward Mission Viejo.

Type 2 support beside the prescribing doctor

Type 2 diabetes is the usual context for this visit. You may already check glucose, take metformin, or use another drug your physician chose. FRI's role is nutrition, strength, sleep, and lab context beside that prescriber. It is not a second prescriber and it is not permission to experiment with the dose.

Dr. Sani Kohen, D.C. and Dr. Tara Kohen, D.C. ask what your numbers do after meals, overnight, and on days you cannot walk because something hurts. Functional Medicine looks at the pattern. It does not tell you to change medication or to stop monitoring glucose.

Type 1 medication stays with endocrinology

If you have type 1 diabetes, insulin and the rest of that medication plan are entirely the endocrinologist's. FRI does not adjust insulin, does not suggest you skip a dose, and does not reinterpret a pump or a sensor. You keep every monitoring habit your specialist taught you.

Support, if it is appropriate at all, is about meals you can coordinate with that medical plan, and about joints that let you stay active. Any idea that sounds like a dose change goes back to endocrinology before you try it. This office will say that out loud.

Nutrition, strength, and labs without touching prescriptions

Nutrition and supplementation focuses on meal rhythm, protein, and foods you can sustain. There is no brand protocol and no supplement that replaces metformin or insulin. Advanced bloodwork may add context your physician wants, such as lipids, and those results go back to that physician.

The metabolic syndrome page describes the wider cluster of waist, blood pressure, glucose, triglycerides, and HDL. You may have diabetes without every piece of that cluster, or the cluster without a diabetes diagnosis. Your physician applies the labels. FRI does not rediagnose you from a single visit.

Monitoring stays in place

Keep checking glucose the way you were taught. A better week of food is not a reason to stop the meter, the sensor, or the lab your physician uses. If numbers are running low because you changed meals and stayed on the same dose, call the prescriber. Do not wait for a chiropractic appointment to sort a low.

Functional medicine at FRI does not replace a primary physician, endocrinologist, gastroenterologist, or mental health clinician. Pain that blocks walking is still worth treating. Corrective exercise therapy and Chiropractic Sports Medicine can help you load joints safely while glucose care stays medical.

What to expect when you are seen for Diabetes

Call (949) 312-1754 or book a complimentary 20-minute consultation if you want to ask how this sits beside your prescriber. FRI is out of network, provides superbills, and accepts HSA and FSA funds. Hours are Monday–Thursday, 9–6.

Bring your medication list and recent glucose records. Expect a food and movement conversation. You will be told to keep monitoring and to leave every diabetes drug dose with the clinician who wrote it.

A wide city, the 22, and work that is often on your feet

Garden Grove stretches from neighborhoods near the 22 to the edge of Little Saigon and the streets around Brookhurst and Westminster. Many patients stand for work, drive the 22, and take care of parents or kids in the same day. That is a lot of load before anyone mentions exercise. Low back pain and neck pain are often traffic-plus-work stories. Knee pain is often a standing-shift story. We would rather hear the shift length than a vague activity score.

Food is also part of the week in a way that matters for gut visits. If you are coming for gut health or food sensitivities, bring the real pattern of meals, not a cleaned-up version. A sensitivity panel is not an automatic first step.

Why the drive is long, and how to make it reasonable

The 22 east to the 55 south, then the 73 or local freeway connections toward Mission Viejo, is the common path. About 22 miles. Thirty-five minutes is a gift. Fifty is normal at the wrong time of day. The suite is 26400 La Alameda, Suite 100, Mission Viejo, CA 92691. Parking on site. Monday through Thursday, 9 to 6.

Because the trip is long, we try not to waste it. You should leave with a plan you can run at home so you are not commuting for a three-minute adjustment. Call (949) 312-1754 to pick a time that is not the peak of the 22. The free consultation is 20 minutes if you want to confirm the trip is worth a full evaluation.

What we can do on that visit

Hands-on options include mobilization, myofascial release, neurodynamics, and exercise. Sciatica is examined as nerve-root pain, not as any pain near the hip. Headaches are screened for urgent features first.

Systemic visits use advanced bloodwork or GI-MAP only when the question requires them. The Garden Grove chiropractor page lists the local links.

Cost of a longer drive

Travel time is the main cost on top of care. The fees are out of network, with superbills and HSA/FSA. We will tell you if a closer clinician is the smarter next step for what you described. We would rather say that on the phone than have you sit on the 22 for a problem we do not treat.

The chiropractors are Drs. Sani and Tara Kohen. See the about page and the office page.

Questions patients ask

Should I stop metformin or insulin if I change my diet?

No. Do not stop metformin, insulin, or any other diabetes medication because you changed how you eat or started strength work. Dose changes belong to the prescribing physician or endocrinologist. Keep monitoring glucose. If readings run low after a meal change, contact that prescriber promptly. FRI will not advise you to discontinue a drug.

Does this page apply to type 1 diabetes?

Type 1 medication is entirely the endocrinologist's. FRI does not adjust insulin or tell you to change a pump, a pen, or a sensor habit. If you want nutrition or joint care, it has to sit beside that specialist, not instead of them. Most of the teaching on this page is written for type 2 support next to the physician already managing your glucose.

Can exercise replace my medication?

No. Strength and walking can support glucose handling, and they do not replace medication. Corrective exercise therapy is here so pain does not bench you. Chiropractic Sports Medicine can treat the joint that keeps you from walking. You still monitor, and you still follow the prescriber. A good training week is not a taper plan.

Will you set a new glucose target for me?

No. FRI does not invent glucose targets or lab ranges. Your physician sets those and interprets your meter, sensor, and bloodwork. Advanced bloodwork here can add context, such as lipids, and the results are shared back. Nutrition changes are practical. They are not a new medical target written in this office.
