Acceleration injury after a crash or a fall
The head is thrown and caught, and the cervical spine deals with that speed. Pain can be local, or it can include headache, shoulder-blade ache, and a sense that the neck does not know where it is. This is not the same problem as ordinary neck pain from a long desk day, even if some treatments overlap later.
Tell the doctor the direction of impact, whether you were braced, and whether you lost consciousness. Those facts change ligament caution. They are more useful than a guess about how fast the other car was going. Dr. Sani Kohen, D.C. and Dr. Tara Kohen, D.C. start there.
Ligament caution, headache, and delayed onset
If you have not been cleared of fracture or a serious ligament injury after significant trauma, a routine manual visit is the wrong first stop. Canadian-style trauma decisions belong with the emergency or medical team that can image you. Functional Restoration Institute does not clear a fresh crash on its own.
Headache, neck stiffness, and dizziness often show up the next day rather than in the parking lot. That delay does not make the injury imaginary. It also does not mean every late symptom is harmless. New weakness, trouble speaking, or a severe escalating headache still needs emergency care.
Dizziness after impact is a screen, not a label
Some people feel spinning or unsteadiness after the acceleration. That can be a vestibular problem, a cervical contribution, or a medical issue that should not be stretched. Vertigo is sorted as a pattern, not diagnosed from the crash story alone.
Balance, eye comfort with head motion, and cervical movement are screened once trauma has been addressed. Joint mobilization is gentle and late if ligaments are still a concern. Early care is often pain control, relative rest from aggravating motion, and a small amount of movement you can do without a flare.
Acute injury and other physicians
When the injury is acute, or when a case involves other physicians, insurers, or attorneys, this office coordinates rather than isolating you. Notes say what was found and what was not tested. They do not inflate findings for a claim, and they do not minimize a real deficit.
New bowel or bladder changes, saddle numbness, rapidly worsening weakness, fever with spine pain, or significant trauma belong in emergency care, not a routine visit. For a cleared mechanical whiplash, there is still no promised number of visits. Chiropractic Sports Medicine guides the joint care once it is safe to give.
What to expect when you are seen for Whiplash
If you are fresh from a crash, the first question is whether you have been medically cleared. If not, you will be sent for that before hands-on cervical care. If you have, the exam is quieter than a gym assessment: motion, neurologic checks, and irritability.
Later visits add mobilization or exercise only as headache, dizziness, and neck motion allow. You will not be given a twelve-visit package as a forecast. The plan is rewritten when symptoms change, including when they change later than you expected.
Before you leave Old Towne
No referral. Out of network. Superbill and HSA/FSA. Bring prior records. We coordinate with physicians at Chapman's orbit and elsewhere, and we do not replace them.

Old Towne, the Plaza, and the hills east of the 55
Old Towne Orange is walking, the Plaza, Chapman, and a lot of time in a chair between those walks. The Block and the streets west of the plaza are errands and traffic. Santiago Hills and the east side climb. People who live in the hills and work down in the flatlands stack a grade onto a commute. Knees notice the hills. Necks notice the 55. Lower back pain notices both, especially the seat time.
Students and staff around Chapman bring a different schedule: carrying a bag, sitting in lectures, and training when they can. That is not a football clinic. It is a reason to look at load instead of only at the spot that hurts. Shoulder pain and neck pain are common in that mix.
Down the 55 from Orange
Take the 55 south toward the 73 and Mission Viejo. About 20 miles and 30 to 45 minutes to 26400 La Alameda, Suite 100, Mission Viejo, CA 92691. Parking is at the building. The clinic is open Monday through Thursday, 9 to 6. The drive back up the 55 in the afternoon is the expensive direction. Morning appointments are easier on the neck you came to have examined.
Call (949) 312-1754. If you are comparing us with a closer office on Tustin Avenue or Chapman, the difference is the length and the intent of the visit, not a secret technique. The 20-minute consultation lets you see that before you commit to a course of care.
What the visit can cover
Spine and joint care may include adjustments, mobilization, McKenzie exercises, and DNS. Headaches that start in the neck are in scope. Sudden severe headaches are not. They belong in emergency care.
Perimenopause, migraines, and gut health are evaluated on their own terms, with labs only when the history makes a test useful. See the Orange chiropractor page for the full set of local links.
Questions patients ask
Why can whiplash symptoms wait a day or two after a crash?
Inflammation and muscle guarding often build after the impact, so stiffness, headache, or dizziness may be mild in the first hours and clearer the next morning. A delay does not mean you invented the injury. It also does not make every new symptom minor. Weakness, trouble speaking, or a rapidly worsening headache still needs emergency care, whatever the calendar says.
What does ligament caution change about a whiplash exam?
If fracture or an important ligament injury has not been ruled out after real trauma, the neck is not manipulated or deeply mobilized here. That clearance belongs with the medical team that can image you. Once you are cleared, testing is still graded. Painful spasm is not a reason to twist the neck to prove range. Early motion is small and stopped if symptoms spike.
Can whiplash include headache or dizziness, or is it only neck pain?
Headache and dizziness are common companions of an acceleration injury, along with neck and shoulder-blade pain. They are screened, not assumed to be permanent, and not all of them are cervical. Spinning vertigo may need a different clinician. A headache that is sudden and severe, or paired with neurologic deficit, is an emergency rather than a follow-up topic.
Will you promise a set number of visits after a collision?
No. Recovery does not follow a package, and this office will not quote one for a claim or for your comfort. Visit frequency follows irritability, motion, and whether other physicians are involved. Some people need a short course. Others need longer coordination. A fixed count would be a guess, and a guess is not a plan.
