The cluster your physician already uses
Waist measurement, blood pressure, glucose, triglycerides, and HDL are the pieces clinicians group when they talk about metabolic syndrome. Your physician applies the cutoffs and makes the diagnosis. FRI does not invent those ranges, and it does not relabel you from a conversation about diet.
You might have been told the cluster is present even though you feel fine, or you might feel tired after meals and short of breath on stairs. Both are reasons to ask what is driving your particular mix. Dr. Sani Kohen, D.C. and Dr. Tara Kohen, D.C. start with which pieces are actually off.
FRI's role beside that physician
Functional Medicine here is lifestyle, nutrition, and additional lab context. It is not a replacement for the primary physician who manages blood pressure and glucose medication. If you have diabetes, that page explains why metformin and insulin stay with the prescriber. This page is the wider cluster, which you can have with or without a diabetes label.
Blood pressure symptoms such as chest pain, a severe headache, or shortness of breath at rest need medical care the same day. A nutrition appointment is not the place to manage a hypertensive emergency. Keep the clinician who adjusts those drugs.
Lifestyle and food as the actual work
Meal rhythm, protein, walking, and strength you can repeat are the tools. Sleep loss and a weekly alcohol pattern belong in the same plan because they move triglycerides and morning glucose for many people. There is no brand diet and no supplement dose on this page.
The weight loss page is about scale, muscle, and pain that blocks training. Metabolic syndrome can exist at many body sizes, so the goal is not automatically a number of pounds. FRI does not promise pounds and does not make GLP-1 claims.
Labs that add context without a new diagnosis
Advanced bloodwork can fill gaps your physician wants to see, such as a fuller lipid look or glucose markers, and the interpretation of disease stays with that physician. A thyroid panel is added only when thyroid symptoms are part of the stall.
Functional medicine at FRI does not replace a primary physician, endocrinologist, gastroenterologist, or mental health clinician. Nutrition and supplementation follows the labs you have. Chiropractic Sports Medicine and Neuromuscular Rehabilitation help when joints are why the walking never starts.
What to expect when you are seen for Metabolic Syndrome
A complimentary 20-minute consultation is a fit if you want lifestyle support beside your physician, not a new diagnosis. FRI is out of network, provides superbills, and accepts HSA and FSA funds. Hours are Monday–Thursday, 9–6.
Bring blood pressure readings, lipid panels, and glucose labs you already have. The plan talks about food, sleep, and movement. Medication doses stay where they are unless your prescriber changes them.
Office facts for a next-door patient
No referral. Bring trail shoes if the foot, knee, or hip is why you came. Imaging is optional unless another doctor already ordered it. Emergency symptoms, especially progressive weakness or bowel and bladder change with back pain, should not be driven to a chiropractic office.
Out of network, superbill, HSA/FSA. Drs. Sani and Tara Kohen see patients on site. Backgrounds are on the about page. The building is on the office page.
Foothill Ranch trails, Portola hills, and Bake Parkway desks
Lake Forest is several towns wearing one name. Foothill Ranch and the Whiting Ranch trailhead mean climbing and descending on dirt. Portola Hills is grades and families. Baker Ranch and the business parks along Bake Parkway mean new housing, sitting, and a short freeway hop. A knee that hurts after Whiting Ranch is not the same case as a neck that hurts after a day in a Bake office. Tell us which Lake Forest you are actually using.
The old El Toro base is now housing and shops, so a lot of daily walking is on new pavement between a car and a desk. That is a fair place to start a gait conversation if the foot or hip is the complaint. Plantar fasciitis shows up in people who added trail miles without adding calf capacity. We will say that plainly if the exam supports it.
The neighbor drive, which people underestimate
Six miles is not zero when El Toro Road is backed up. From Foothill Ranch, El Toro or Portola Parkway toward Mission Viejo is the usual path. From the south side, Trabuco Road. From Baker Ranch, Bake Parkway to local streets. Budget 12 to 20 minutes to 26400 La Alameda, Suite 100, Mission Viejo, CA 92691. Monday through Thursday, 9 to 6. Parking at the suite.
Being close tempts people to squeeze care between school pickup and a trail run. Book the visit when you can stay for the exam. Phone (949) 312-1754. The 20-minute consultation is appropriate if you are comparing this office with a closer high-volume clinic and you want to see the difference before you commit.
Problems that match these neighborhoods
Trail downs and soccer weekends point to knee pain, hip pain, and ankle-aware gait work. Desk parks point to neck pain and headaches. Corrective exercise is how a Whiting Ranch descent gets trained for, instead of avoided forever.
Energy and thyroid questions come from the same households. Thyroid dysfunction and chronic fatigue are worked up with history and selected labs, not with a promise that a trail run will fix your labs. The Lake Forest chiropractor page links the pillars for this city.
Questions patients ask
Can FRI diagnose metabolic syndrome?
Your physician is the one who applies the cluster of waist, blood pressure, glucose, triglycerides, and HDL. FRI does not replace that diagnosis or invent cutoff numbers. The visit can help you understand which pieces are yours and can organize nutrition and labs beside that physician. Bring the results they already ordered so the story stays consistent.
Will lifestyle work replace my blood pressure medication?
No. Do not stop a blood pressure drug, a statin, metformin, or insulin because you changed food or started walking. Those decisions belong to the prescribing physician. Lifestyle support can sit beside the prescription. If readings change, tell that clinician. FRI will not taper a medication for you.
Is this the same as diabetes or weight loss?
No. Diabetes is a glucose disease with its own medication rules. Weight loss is a conversation about scale, muscle, and training barriers. Metabolic syndrome is the physician's cluster, and you can qualify with a mix of those pieces. The pages are separate so a waist measurement is not treated as a diabetes diagnosis, and a diabetes diagnosis is not reduced to a diet.
Do I need a hormone test?
Only if the history asks a hormone question, such as cycle change or a clear cortisol and sleep problem. A DUTCH test is not automatic for this cluster. Advanced bloodwork is the more direct tool for lipids and glucose context. Thyroid testing waits for thyroid symptoms. Extra kits are not a sign of a more serious visit.
