Mycotoxin Testing in Irvine, CA

Mycotoxin testing uses a urine sample to look for mold-related toxins the body is excreting. Functional Restoration Institute orders it in the Functional Medicine pillar when the history includes water-damaged buildings and a matching symptom picture. The test does not inspect a house. It is not a detox tea, and a result is not a cleanse protocol. The number is a reason for a careful conversation. Patients from Irvine are seen at 26400 La Alameda, Suite 100, Mission Viejo, about 12 miles and 20–35 minutes by I-5 south, or the 133 to the 73, toward Mission Viejo.

Mycotoxins measured in urine

Certain molds make mycotoxins. A urine test measures selected toxins or their metabolites that the body is getting rid of. It is a snapshot of excretion, not a photograph of every mold spore in a room. Collection is usually a urine sample at home, sometimes with instructions about timing. Dr. Tara Kohen explains the prep the kit actually requires, and skips folklore that is not on the sheet.

Mycotoxin testing is an additional lab cost, discussed before the kit is ordered. The review visit often runs 30 to 60 minutes depending on the plan. A free 20-minute consultation is the right place to ask whether the history even justifies the test. FRI is out of network, accepts HSA and FSA cards, and provides a superbill for the clinical time. The lab bills separately.

Water-damaged buildings in the history

The history that makes this test worth considering is specific. A leak that was painted over, a basement that smelled, a workplace with stained ceiling tiles, symptoms that began or worsened after a move into a damp building. Mold toxicity is the phrase patients use. The visit translates that phrase into where you lived, when, and what got wet.

Symptoms people connect with this history include profound fatigue, brain fog, sinus trouble that tracks the building, and a sense of being inflamed without a clear infection. Those symptoms have many other causes. The building story is why mycotoxins are on the list. Without that story, the test is usually the wrong spend. Chronic fatigue alone does not equal mold.

The lab does not inspect your house

A urine result cannot tell you which wall is wet, whether the HVAC is contaminated, or if remediation was done well. Those are building questions for an indoor environmental professional, not for a chiropractic and functional medicine visit. FRI can say the history and the urine are worth taking seriously. FRI cannot certify a house safe or unsafe.

If the result is elevated and you are still sleeping in the room that leaks, no supplement plan outruns ongoing exposure. The practical order is to understand exposure, then decide what medical and environmental steps belong. Dr. Sani Kohen will say that plainly. Leaving the building question unasked while chasing a urine number wastes the test.

Care without a detox product pitch

There is no detox tea in this plan, and no claim that a drink pulls mycotoxins out of you. Support, if it is offered, is matched to the result and the person, and it is discussed as a trial with a reason. Product names and doses are not the point of the testing visit. Food, sleep, and whether you are still exposed come first.

A positive test is not a diagnosis of a mold illness by itself. A negative test does not erase a convincing building history. Both outcomes are interpreted. If another clinician should be involved, that referral is part of the note. The Functional Medicine pillar is comfortable saying the test did not answer the question.

What a Mycotoxin Testing visit is like

Expect questions about buildings, not only about symptoms. Dates, smells, visible water, and whether you still spend time there will come up. The kit, if ordered, is a urine collection with instructions you should read before the morning you collect. The review happens after the lab reports, with the page open.

You should leave knowing what the urine can say, what it cannot say about your house, and what the next responsible step is. That step might be an environmental inspection by someone who does that work, a different medical evaluation, or a decision that this test was not informative. All three are acceptable endings.

Insurance and coordination

Many Irvine employers offer HSA or FSA accounts. Those cards work here. We are still out of network and we still give a superbill rather than billing your plan directly. Lab work is quoted before it is ordered. We will not tell you to stop a medication from your Irvine physician.

Drs. Sani and Tara Kohen lead the clinic. Training details are on the about page. If you want to see the rehab gym before you drive the 5, use the office page.

Business parks, village trails, and a city built for sitting

Irvine's villages do not share a body. Woodbridge and University Park are older loops and pools. Turtle Rock and Quail Hill have more grade. The Spectrum and the Great Park are newer and more spread out. The job, for a lot of patients, is a campus along Jamboree, Barranca, or the Irvine Business Complex: long meetings, a badge, and a walk that is only from the garage. Neck, upper back, and headache complaints often start there. Knee and hip complaints often start on the village trails people use to undo the job.

We do not treat Irvine as a single activity level. A cyclist on the San Diego Creek trail and a software lead who has not exercised since a move from Woodbridge need different exams. Neck pain and headaches are common desk presentations. Hip and SI pain shows up when someone adds mileage fast. Say which village and which campus.

South on the 5 or the 73 from Irvine

From central and north Irvine, I-5 south toward Mission Viejo is the simple drive. From the south villages and from many business parks, the 133 to the 73 toll road is often cleaner. About 12 miles. Twenty minutes is realistic off peak. Thirty-five is realistic when the 5 is slow through Lake Forest. The office is 26400 La Alameda, Suite 100, Mission Viejo, CA 92691. Building parking. Monday through Thursday, 9 to 6.

Irvine patients are used to efficient clinics. This one is deliberately less efficient. An exam takes time. If you need to be back on Jamboree for a meeting, book a morning visit and leave a buffer. Phone (949) 312-1754. The 20-minute consultation is the right first step if you are shopping for a style of care rather than ready for testing.

Questions patients ask

Can this urine test find the mold in my walls?

No. It measures mycotoxins being excreted. It does not inspect a building. A wet wall needs an environmental assessment, not a lab interpretation.

Is a detox tea part of the plan?

No. FRI does not use a tea or a cleanse claim for mycotoxins. Any support is tied to the result and the exposure history, and it is discussed as a trial.

Should I test if I have never been around water damage?

Usually no. The test earns its cost when the building history and the symptoms point the same direction. Fatigue alone is a weak reason.

Does a high result diagnose a mold illness?

No. It is one finding. Ongoing exposure, other illnesses, and a physician's judgment still matter. A low result also does not erase a clear building history.
