Hip Pain Treatment in Irvine, CA

Pain around the hip is sorted by region. Groin, buttock, and the outer hip point toward different structures, and the sacroiliac joint is only one of them. Lumbar referral and the hip joint itself have to be separated on purpose. Not every buttock ache is a sacroiliac problem, and the exam is built to resist that shortcut. For patients coming from Irvine, the office is about 12 miles away, 20–35 minutes, by I-5 south, or the 133 to the 73, toward Mission Viejo.

Groin, buttock, and the outside of the hip

Groin pain that is worse with hip flexion, rotation, or a deep squat raises the hip joint, the labrum, or the hip flexors as questions. Pain on the outer hip, tender over the gluteal tendons and worse when you lie on that side or stand on one leg, is often a tendon problem. Buttock pain is the least specific of the three.

Buttock pain can be lumbar, sacroiliac, deep hip rotator, or the hip joint referring backward. Pinching the spot and deciding is how people get the wrong plan. The region tells you where to start the exam.

The sacroiliac joint is tested, not assumed

The sacroiliac joint can refer into the buttock and sometimes the groin, and it can hurt with transitional movements such as standing up or rolling in bed. A single tender point next to the joint is not a diagnosis. A cluster of provocation tests is used, and even that cluster is read with the lumbar exam, not instead of it.

Dr. Tara Kohen, D.C. will not tell you every buttock pain is the SI joint. If the tests do not gather around that joint, the label is dropped. Lower back pain patterns, especially extension or flexion intolerance, are compared on the same visit so a lumbar driver is not renamed as pelvic.

Lumbar referral versus the hip joint itself

Lumbar referral is more likely when spine motion changes the buttock pain and the hip joint moves relatively freely. Hip joint pain is more likely when rotation of the hip reproduces the groin or buttock pain and the spine does not. Nerve tension testing is added if the pain travels below the knee.

Both a lumbar scan and a hip scan can show age-related changes at the same time. The exam decides which one matches today's pain. Treating the film with the larger sentence is not a method. Functional Restoration Institute would rather be specific and occasionally uncertain than confidently wrong.

Gait and control once the painful region is clearer

Gait and postural analysis looks at whether you drop the pelvis on one leg, shorten the stride, or turn the foot out to protect a side. Those habits can persist after the joint is calmer and keep reloading it. They are findings, not character flaws.

Corrective exercise then trains the hip and trunk in the pattern you failed, often a single-leg task or a hinge that does not provoke the groin. Neuromuscular Rehabilitation is the pillar for that piece. Joint care, if used, is there to make the exercise possible.

What to expect when you are seen for Hip Pain

You will point to groin, buttock, or outer hip, then move the spine and the hip separately so the two are not blurred. Provocation tests for the pelvis are done as a group. You should hear which region led and which was set aside.

Exercise starts once that split is clear enough to load something safely. The office is out of network and can provide a superbill if you use an HSA or FSA. No one will claim the sacroiliac joint was your problem simply because the buttock was the part that hurt.

South on the 5 or the 73 from Irvine

From central and north Irvine, I-5 south toward Mission Viejo is the simple drive. From the south villages and from many business parks, the 133 to the 73 toll road is often cleaner. About 12 miles. Twenty minutes is realistic off peak. Thirty-five is realistic when the 5 is slow through Lake Forest. The office is 26400 La Alameda, Suite 100, Mission Viejo, CA 92691. Building parking. Monday through Thursday, 9 to 6.

Irvine patients are used to efficient clinics. This one is deliberately less efficient. An exam takes time. If you need to be back on Jamboree for a meeting, book a morning visit and leave a buffer. Phone (949) 312-1754. The 20-minute consultation is the right first step if you are shopping for a style of care rather than ready for testing.

Desk symptoms and training symptoms, handled separately

Corrective exercise and DNS are how we retrain sitting and breathing patterns after the exam shows they matter. Chiropractic adjustments are used when a joint is not moving, not as a subscription. Carpal tunnel symptoms get a neck screen and a nerve exam, because a keyboard is not automatically the wrist.

The same city asks functional medicine questions: thyroid, burnout-style fatigue people want explained, and gut symptoms after years of desk lunches. Those are history-first visits. The hub page is the Irvine chiropractor page.

Insurance and coordination

Many Irvine employers offer HSA or FSA accounts. Those cards work here. We are still out of network and we still give a superbill rather than billing your plan directly. Lab work is quoted before it is ordered. We will not tell you to stop a medication from your Irvine physician.

Drs. Sani and Tara Kohen lead the clinic. Training details are on the about page. If you want to see the rehab gym before you drive the 5, use the office page.

Business parks, village trails, and a city built for sitting

Irvine's villages do not share a body. Woodbridge and University Park are older loops and pools. Turtle Rock and Quail Hill have more grade. The Spectrum and the Great Park are newer and more spread out. The job, for a lot of patients, is a campus along Jamboree, Barranca, or the Irvine Business Complex: long meetings, a badge, and a walk that is only from the garage. Neck, upper back, and headache complaints often start there. Knee and hip complaints often start on the village trails people use to undo the job.

We do not treat Irvine as a single activity level. A cyclist on the San Diego Creek trail and a software lead who has not exercised since a move from Woodbridge need different exams. Neck pain and headaches are common desk presentations. Hip and SI pain shows up when someone adds mileage fast. Say which village and which campus.

Questions patients ask

How do groin pain, buttock pain, and outer hip pain differ?

Groin pain more often implicates the hip joint, the labrum, or the flexors, especially when flexion and rotation reproduce it. Outer hip pain often tracks with the gluteal tendons and side-lying or single-leg stance. Buttock pain is a shared zone for the lumbar spine, the sacroiliac joint, and the hip. The region starts the exam. It does not name the tissue by itself.

Is buttock pain basically a sacroiliac joint problem?

No. That shortcut is common and often wrong. The sacroiliac joint is tested with a cluster of provocation tests and by comparing lumbar and hip motion. If those tests do not agree, the joint is not blamed. Lumbar referral, deep rotator irritation, and the hip joint remain on the list until the exam actually narrows them.

How do you separate a lumbar driver from the hip joint?

Spine movements are tested while the hip is relatively still, then the hip is rotated and flexed while the spine is quiet. If spine motion copies the pain and hip motion does not, the lumbar side leads. If hip rotation copies groin or buttock pain and the spine does not, the hip leads. Pain below the knee pulls nerve testing into the same visit.

What does walking analysis add after you already know the sore spot?

People keep protective habits, such as dropping the pelvis, shortening one stride, or turning a foot out, long after a joint calms down. Those habits reload the same region. Watching gait shows which habit is yours. The exercise that follows is chosen from that, so you are not given a generic hip stretch that misses the way you actually walk.
