Knee Pain Treatment in Irvine, CA

Knee pain is often a load problem: the kneecap, the meniscus, or a tendon taking more than it can stand right now. The hip and the foot change that load, so the exam does not stop at the joint that hurts. Functional Restoration Institute does not perform knee surgery. Care uses gait, joint movement, soft tissue work, and exercise. For patients coming from Irvine, the office is about 12 miles away, 20–35 minutes, by I-5 south, or the 133 to the 73, toward Mission Viejo.

Patellofemoral load, meniscus, and tendon

Pain around or behind the kneecap that climbs stairs, protests a squat, or shows up after sitting is a patellofemoral pattern worth testing. Joint-line pain after a twist, with catching, raises a meniscus question. Pain at the patellar or quadriceps tendon that tracks with jumping or running load is a different tissue again.

These patterns overlap, and a paragraph cannot diagnose you. Swelling, true locking, or a knee that gives way on level ground needs a physician's eye as well as a movement exam. The point of the first visit is to see which load your knee actually fails, not to rename it.

How the hip and foot change what the knee feels

If the hip does not control the thigh, the knee can drift inward during a step-down or a squat. That drift raises patellofemoral and tendon load even when the kneecap itself looks unremarkable. A stiff ankle or a foot that collapses can do the same from below.

Gait and postural analysis watches that chain at walking speed, not only on a table. Functional movement screening adds a squat, a step, and a single-leg task so the painful position is seen rather than described. The hip is treated when it is the weak link, not by default.

Hands-on work does not replace a stronger knee

Active Release Technique can be used on a guarded quadriceps, a tight calf, or tissue around the patellar tendon when that tissue is limiting motion. Joint mobilization may help a knee or a nearby joint that is stiff in the direction you need for a clean step.

Neither technique strengthens the tendon or the quadriceps. Corrective exercise does that job, dosed below the pain that lingers into the next day. Chiropractic Sports Medicine and Neuromuscular Rehabilitation split this work at Functional Restoration Institute. The hands-on piece is a bridge, not the program.

Knee surgery is not something this clinic performs

Functional Restoration Institute does not perform knee surgery or injections. If your exam suggests a major meniscus tear, ligament rupture, or a joint that needs an orthopedic opinion, you will be told and pointed that way. Movement care can still matter before or after that opinion. It does not replace it.

You can call (949) 312-1754 to ask whether a gait-based exam fits the knee pain you have. Bring shoes you actually walk in. A plan built in the shoes you wore once for a visit is a plan about the wrong foot.

What to expect when you are seen for Knee Pain

You will squat, step down, and walk while someone watches the knee, hip, and foot. The painful structure is palpated and the joint is moved. You should leave knowing which pattern led the exam and which exercise matches it.

Soreness that settles within a day is treated differently from swelling or sharp pain that changes your gait. The second response means the dose was too high. Visits are adjusted from that, without a promise that the knee will be quiet after a set number of sessions.

South on the 5 or the 73 from Irvine

From central and north Irvine, I-5 south toward Mission Viejo is the simple drive. From the south villages and from many business parks, the 133 to the 73 toll road is often cleaner. About 12 miles. Twenty minutes is realistic off peak. Thirty-five is realistic when the 5 is slow through Lake Forest. The office is 26400 La Alameda, Suite 100, Mission Viejo, CA 92691. Building parking. Monday through Thursday, 9 to 6.

Irvine patients are used to efficient clinics. This one is deliberately less efficient. An exam takes time. If you need to be back on Jamboree for a meeting, book a morning visit and leave a buffer. Phone (949) 312-1754. The 20-minute consultation is the right first step if you are shopping for a style of care rather than ready for testing.

Desk symptoms and training symptoms, handled separately

Corrective exercise and DNS are how we retrain sitting and breathing patterns after the exam shows they matter. Chiropractic adjustments are used when a joint is not moving, not as a subscription. Carpal tunnel symptoms get a neck screen and a nerve exam, because a keyboard is not automatically the wrist.

The same city asks functional medicine questions: thyroid, burnout-style fatigue people want explained, and gut symptoms after years of desk lunches. Those are history-first visits. The hub page is the Irvine chiropractor page.

Insurance and coordination

Many Irvine employers offer HSA or FSA accounts. Those cards work here. We are still out of network and we still give a superbill rather than billing your plan directly. Lab work is quoted before it is ordered. We will not tell you to stop a medication from your Irvine physician.

Drs. Sani and Tara Kohen lead the clinic. Training details are on the about page. If you want to see the rehab gym before you drive the 5, use the office page.

Business parks, village trails, and a city built for sitting

Irvine's villages do not share a body. Woodbridge and University Park are older loops and pools. Turtle Rock and Quail Hill have more grade. The Spectrum and the Great Park are newer and more spread out. The job, for a lot of patients, is a campus along Jamboree, Barranca, or the Irvine Business Complex: long meetings, a badge, and a walk that is only from the garage. Neck, upper back, and headache complaints often start there. Knee and hip complaints often start on the village trails people use to undo the job.

We do not treat Irvine as a single activity level. A cyclist on the San Diego Creek trail and a software lead who has not exercised since a move from Woodbridge need different exams. Neck pain and headaches are common desk presentations. Hip and SI pain shows up when someone adds mileage fast. Say which village and which campus.

Questions patients ask

How do you separate kneecap pain from a meniscus problem?

Kneecap pain usually tracks with stairs, squats, and sitting, and it sits around or behind the patella. Meniscus irritation more often follows a twist, sits on the joint line, and may catch or click in a way that blocks motion. The two can coexist. The exam uses the location, the aggravating load, and joint tests together rather than trusting one click.

Why examine my hip and foot when the knee is what hurts?

The knee sits between them and inherits their alignment during every step. A hip that lets the thigh collapse inward, or a foot that pronates hard, can raise load on the kneecap or a tendon. Treating only the sore spot misses that. If the hip and foot test well, they are left alone and the knee itself carries the plan.

Do you operate on knees or inject them in this office?

No. Functional Restoration Institute does not perform knee surgery or injections. Orthopedic decisions stay with an orthopedic clinician. What this office can do is examine gait and load, treat stiff joints and irritable soft tissue, and build a strengthening plan. If the exam suggests you need a surgical opinion, that referral is part of the visit, not a failure of it.

What does gait analysis add to a knee exam on the table?

Table tests show tenderness and how the joint moves in isolation. Gait shows whether the hip, knee, and foot actually coordinate when you are upright and loaded. A knee that is calm on the table and noisy during a step-down is telling you where to train. Shoes matter in that picture, so the shoes you use all week are part of the test.
