Migraines Treatment in Irvine, CA

Migraine is a neurologic condition, not a neck cramp with a dramatic name. Chiropractic care may help when neck movement is a real contributor, and it is not a cure. It does not replace a neurologist who is already involved. Sleep, stress timing, and, when your history suggests it, functional medicine questions can sit beside that plan. For patients coming from Irvine, the office is about 12 miles away, 20–35 minutes, by I-5 south, or the 133 to the 73, toward Mission Viejo.

Migraine is a neurologic condition

Migraine commonly includes moderate or severe pain, often one-sided and pulsing, with nausea or sensitivity to light and sound. Some people have aura. The nervous system is changing how it processes sensory input. Calling that a simple joint dysfunction misses the disease.

Neck pain shows up during many attacks and between them. That overlap tempts everyone to blame the cervical spine. Sometimes the neck is a trigger or an aggravating factor. Sometimes it is only along for the ride. Functional Restoration Institute will not flatten that distinction to sell a neck treatment.

Neck contributors without calling them the cause

If turning your head or holding a posture reliably starts a familiar attack, a cervical exam belongs in the plan. Chiropractic adjustments or mobilization may be used when a stiff upper cervical or thoracic joint reproduces your head and neck symptoms. The aim is fewer musculoskeletal triggers, not a cure of migraine.

If neck movement does nothing to your attacks, repeating joint care is hard to justify. You will hear that. Care then stays with whoever manages the migraine medically, and this office does not compete with that plan. A related headache page covers cervicogenic patterns that are a different problem.

Sleep, stress rhythm, and a careful functional look

Sleep timing and a chaotic stress schedule are discussed because both are well known to cluster with attacks for many people. This is practical history, not a lifestyle lecture. You may be asked to keep attack timing next to bedtime and skipped meals for a short stretch so the pattern is visible.

Functional Medicine enters only when the history suggests it, for example a clear hormonal pattern, a food trigger you can describe, or an inflammatory illness already under care. Nutrition and supplementation is not a stock migraine protocol, and no doses are invented on this page.

Care beside a neurologist, not instead of one

If a neurologist is involved, chiropractic care is an adjunct. Medication changes stay with that physician. Dr. Sani Kohen, D.C. and Dr. Tara Kohen, D.C. will not ask you to stop a preventive drug because a joint moved better this week.

New neurologic deficit, a thunderclap onset, or a migraine that has changed into something unfamiliar belongs in emergency or neurology care, not in a routine opening. You can read more about the doctors if you want to know who would examine the neck contribution and who would send you onward.

What to expect when you are seen for Migraines

The first visit separates migraine features from a neck pattern you can reproduce. You will be asked about aura, nausea, light sensitivity, and what neck movement actually does. Any hands-on care that day is modest and aimed only at a joint that earned it.

Follow-ups track attack frequency against sleep and the neck findings, not against a promise of fewer headaches by a date. If functional testing is relevant, it is proposed after the history supports it, with results explained before any nutrition change is even discussed.

Desk symptoms and training symptoms, handled separately

Corrective exercise and DNS are how we retrain sitting and breathing patterns after the exam shows they matter. Chiropractic adjustments are used when a joint is not moving, not as a subscription. Carpal tunnel symptoms get a neck screen and a nerve exam, because a keyboard is not automatically the wrist.

The same city asks functional medicine questions: thyroid, burnout-style fatigue people want explained, and gut symptoms after years of desk lunches. Those are history-first visits. The hub page is the Irvine chiropractor page.

Insurance and coordination

Many Irvine employers offer HSA or FSA accounts. Those cards work here. We are still out of network and we still give a superbill rather than billing your plan directly. Lab work is quoted before it is ordered. We will not tell you to stop a medication from your Irvine physician.

Drs. Sani and Tara Kohen lead the clinic. Training details are on the about page. If you want to see the rehab gym before you drive the 5, use the office page.

Business parks, village trails, and a city built for sitting

Irvine's villages do not share a body. Woodbridge and University Park are older loops and pools. Turtle Rock and Quail Hill have more grade. The Spectrum and the Great Park are newer and more spread out. The job, for a lot of patients, is a campus along Jamboree, Barranca, or the Irvine Business Complex: long meetings, a badge, and a walk that is only from the garage. Neck, upper back, and headache complaints often start there. Knee and hip complaints often start on the village trails people use to undo the job.

We do not treat Irvine as a single activity level. A cyclist on the San Diego Creek trail and a software lead who has not exercised since a move from Woodbridge need different exams. Neck pain and headaches are common desk presentations. Hip and SI pain shows up when someone adds mileage fast. Say which village and which campus.

South on the 5 or the 73 from Irvine

From central and north Irvine, I-5 south toward Mission Viejo is the simple drive. From the south villages and from many business parks, the 133 to the 73 toll road is often cleaner. About 12 miles. Twenty minutes is realistic off peak. Thirty-five is realistic when the 5 is slow through Lake Forest. The office is 26400 La Alameda, Suite 100, Mission Viejo, CA 92691. Building parking. Monday through Thursday, 9 to 6.

Irvine patients are used to efficient clinics. This one is deliberately less efficient. An exam takes time. If you need to be back on Jamboree for a meeting, book a morning visit and leave a buffer. Phone (949) 312-1754. The 20-minute consultation is the right first step if you are shopping for a style of care rather than ready for testing.

Questions patients ask

Can chiropractic care replace the neurologist managing my migraine?

No. Migraine is a neurologic condition, and a neurologist who is already involved remains the physician for that disease, including medications. Chiropractic care may address a neck or thoracic contributor when the exam supports one. It is an adjunct. It is not a cure, and it is not a reason to stop a drug another doctor prescribed.

How can neck treatment matter if migraine is not a neck disease?

Neck pain is common in migraine, and for some people a sustained posture or a stiff cervical joint reliably precedes an attack. Treating that contributor can be worthwhile even though it does not treat the neurologic disease itself. If neck movement never changes your attacks, there is little reason to keep adjusting the neck and call it migraine care.

When would hormones, food, or inflammation even be discussed?

Only when your history points there. A menstrual pattern, a specific food you have already linked to attacks, or a known inflammatory condition can make a Functional Medicine conversation reasonable. It is not opened for every person with migraine, and it is not framed as the single hidden cause. Any lab is explained before it is ordered.

Will I be handed a supplement schedule for migraine on the first visit?

No. This page does not contain a supplement protocol, and the clinic does not invent doses to attach to a migraine diagnosis. Nutrition changes, if they come up at all, follow a history and, when appropriate, labs. You will hear what is being considered and why. You will not be sold a standing list of products for attacks.
