Hashimoto's Thyroiditis Treatment in Dana Point, CA

Hashimoto's thyroiditis is an autoimmune pattern in which immune activity is directed at thyroid tissue. Antibodies can be high while you still feel well, or symptoms can be loud. This page covers how that pattern is discussed, why gut questions are optional, and why antibody numbers are not a promise of reversal. For patients coming from Dana Point, the office is about 11 miles away, 18–30 minutes, by I-5 north to the La Paz or Oso Parkway exits.

An immune pattern aimed at the thyroid

Hashimoto's is not simply a low thyroid number. It is immune activity directed at thyroid tissue, often tracked with thyroid peroxidase antibodies and thyroglobulin antibodies. You might feel a slow pace, a swollen sensation at the neck, or swings between wired and flat as the gland is irritated.

Some people are diagnosed after a routine antibody test and feel little. Others have been told their TSH is acceptable while hair, cycles, and energy keep changing. Drs. Sani Kohen, D.C. and Tara Kohen, D.C. separate those stories. The diagnosis itself, when it is formal, belongs with your physician.

Antibodies inform the visit and do not promise reversal

A thyroid panel can include TSH, free T3, free T4, reverse T3, and the antibodies named above. FRI will talk through what each one is asking. Nobody here promises that antibodies will fall, disappear, or stay down on a schedule. That kind of claim is not something this office makes.

Medication changes, including whether you need thyroid hormone at all, stay with the prescribing physician. Functional Medicine can line up the history, the panel, and questions about sleep and food. It does not take over the prescription. If your dose feels wrong, you take that concern back to the person who writes it.

Gut and inflammation are optional threads

Some people with autoimmune thyroid disease also have bloating, stool changes, or joint stiffness. Those clues can justify a gut conversation. They are not proof that the gut caused the thyroid disease. FRI will not tell you that repairing digestion will turn antibodies off.

If the history supports it, GI-MAP stool testing can look at organisms, inflammation markers, and digestion clues. A food panel is not automatic. You can read the separate pages on thyroid dysfunction and gut health to see how those questions differ from this one.

How this visit differs from a general thyroid check

A general thyroid visit may stop at TSH and symptoms of pace. A Hashimoto's visit asks about the immune context: family history, other autoimmune diagnoses, postpartum timing, and whether symptoms flare with illness or poor sleep. The gland and the immune system are both on the table.

Functional medicine at FRI does not replace a primary physician, endocrinologist, gastroenterologist, or mental health clinician. Neck pain or a feeling of pressure should be examined medically, not folded into a supplement plan. Nutrition is individualized. There is no brand protocol and no invented dose.

What to expect when you are seen for Hashimoto's Thyroiditis

You may begin with a complimentary 20-minute consultation. FRI is out of network, provides a superbill for reimbursement, and accepts HSA and FSA funds. Appointments run Monday–Thursday, 9–6. Bring prior antibody results if you have them.

The visit compares your symptoms with the panel rather than chasing a single antibody number. If digestion is part of your story, that test is chosen separately. You will not be told to stop thyroid medication.

Practical details before you leave the harbor

Bring the shoes you actually walk in, including deck shoes if that is your day. Imaging reports help when you already have them. You do not need a referral. If another physician is following a fracture, a post-op joint, or a medication, tell us their name so care stays coordinated. We do not change prescriptions.

Fees are out of network. Superbills and HSA/FSA cards are the usual path for Dana Point patients. Confirm reimbursement with your plan. Meet the doctors on the about page and see the clinic on the office page before the drive if that makes the first visit easier.

Harbor work, headlands hiking, and Doheny mornings

Dana Point splits into a few physical lives. The harbor means lines, decks, and carrying gear. Doheny and the strand mean sand and boards. Monarch Beach and the Headlands mean stairs and cliff paths. Lantern Village means more standing and short walks. A low back that hurts after a morning on a boat is questioned differently from a low back that hurts after a desk above Pacific Coast Highway. Tell us which Dana Point you actually use during the week.

Wind and cool mornings also change how people warm up. Many patients go from a still house to a cold deck without any ramp. That is not a moral failing. It is a reason a tendon complaint needs a loading plan, not only a rub. Rotator cuff and neck pain visits often start with that sequence.

The short I-5 hop to La Alameda

From the harbor and from most of Dana Point, I-5 north to La Paz or Oso, then local streets to La Alameda, is the straightforward drive. About 11 miles, often 18 to 30 minutes. Summer beach traffic on PCH and a slow I-5 can add time, so do not cut the appointment to the minute. The suite is 26400 La Alameda, Suite 100, Mission Viejo, CA 92691. Building parking. Monday through Thursday, 9 to 6.

You are close enough that a course of care does not have to be an all-day project. That proximity is useful only if the visits are worth making. We would rather see you less often with a clear home plan than park you on a standing weekly adjustment. Phone (949) 312-1754. The complimentary 20-minute consultation is the low-stakes way to decide.

Care Dana Point patients use most

Boat and board use points us toward shoulder pain, neck pain, and lower back pain. Cliff paths and the strand point toward knee pain and plantar fasciitis. A gait and posture exam is more useful here than a generic stretch sheet when the foot is spending half its life on a deck and half on pavement.

Digestive complaints show up too, especially in people who eat late after being on the water all day. Gut health and SIBO pages explain how we think about testing. A SIBO breath test is one tool, used when the symptom pattern fits, not as a default. The city hub is the Dana Point chiropractor page.

Questions patients ask

Can you make my antibodies go away?

No. FRI does not promise antibody reversal or a target number. Thyroid peroxidase and thyroglobulin antibodies are discussed as part of the picture, next to TSH, free T3, free T4, and reverse T3. Some people feel better while antibodies stay elevated. Symptom changes and antibody changes are not the same outcome, and medication stays with your prescriber.

Does leaky gut cause Hashimoto's?

FRI does not claim that intestinal permeability causes Hashimoto's or any other autoimmune disease. Gut symptoms can be worth testing when you actually have them. GI-MAP stool testing can explore organisms and inflammation markers. It cannot prove a barrier problem created your thyroid disease. Treat gut and thyroid as related questions only when your history connects them.

Is this the same visit as thyroid dysfunction?

No. Thyroid dysfunction is about pace, slow or fast, and about whether TSH alone answered you. Hashimoto's is the autoimmune pattern, centered on antibodies and immune context. You might need both conversations. The pages are separate so a positive antibody result is not treated as a generic thyroid complaint.

Who manages my thyroid prescription?

Your prescribing physician or endocrinologist manages the prescription. Functional medicine at FRI does not replace that clinician, your primary physician, a gastroenterologist, or a mental health clinician. The office can help you prepare questions and can review nutrition. Call the prescriber before you change a dose, even if a new lab looks surprising.
