Gut Health Treatment in Laguna Niguel, CA

Digestion problems rarely arrive as one tidy symptom. Bloating, stool changes, and food reactions can travel together or take turns. This page is the overview: how that history is sorted, and why stool testing, breath testing, and food panels are chosen one at a time instead of stacked on everyone. For patients coming from Laguna Niguel, the office is about 8 miles away, 15–25 minutes, by Crown Valley Parkway or Alicia Parkway toward Mission Viejo.

Bloating, stool changes, and food reactions

You might bloat by evening, swing between loose stool and constipation, or feel fine until a specific meal. Reflux, nausea, and a noisy abdomen belong in the same history. So does the week the pattern started, after travel, an antibiotic, or a stretch of high stress.

FRI treats that timeline as the map. Drs. Sani Kohen, D.C. and Tara Kohen, D.C. ask what you eat, how fast you eat it, and whether pain, not food, is what ruins your appetite. Functional Medicine does not start by forbidding half the grocery store.

Tests are chosen from the history

Not everyone needs every gut test. A person with gas an hour after fruit is a different case from someone with blood in the stool, and the second of those needs a physician promptly. The kit is picked to match the question, not to fill a panel.

GI-MAP stool testing looks at organisms and digestion markers in the stool. SIBO breath testing asks about fermentation in the small intestine. Food sensitivity testing is a separate question about immune reactivity, not a substitute for either of those.

Three neighbor problems, three different pages

Small intestinal bacterial overgrowth, intestinal permeability, and food reactivity get mixed together online. They are neighbors, not copies. The SIBO page is about breath testing and fermentation. The leaky gut page is about the barrier question. Food sensitivities covers IgG and IgA, which are not an allergy diagnosis.

You might need one of those conversations, or more than one, but only if the history points there. Ordering all three on the first day is not the default. A clear question beats a thick stack of paper you cannot use.

Digestion, energy, and the rest of care

Poor digestion can sit beside fatigue, skin changes, or joint stiffness. That overlap is a reason to look, not a reason to blame the gut for every symptom you have. Sleep, thyroid pace, and medications belong in the differential your physicians are already managing.

Functional medicine at FRI does not replace a primary physician, endocrinologist, gastroenterologist, or mental health clinician. Bleeding, black stool, unexplained weight loss, or trouble swallowing goes to a gastroenterologist. Nutrition and supplementation here follows the test you actually needed.

What to expect when you are seen for Gut Health

A complimentary 20-minute consultation is available if you want to describe the pattern before testing. FRI is out of network, provides superbills, and accepts HSA and FSA funds. Hours are Monday–Thursday, 9–6.

You will be asked about stool form, timing of bloating, antibiotics, and travel. One test may be enough to start. Results are read with symptoms, not as a list of foods banned for life.

Master-planned hills, Salt Creek, and Crown Valley traffic

Laguna Niguel is hills and planned neighborhoods: Bear Brand, Kite Hill, the streets above Crown Valley, and the parks along Salt Creek. The walking is rarely flat. Youth sports and weekend rounds of golf share the calendar with freeway jobs north of here. Knees notice the downhills. Low backs notice the car. Necks notice the laptop that follows the commute. We use those specifics in the exam instead of a checkbox that says active.

Salt Creek and the regional park give people a place to walk that is not a treadmill. If walking helps your pain or provokes it, we want to know which path. A loop that is fine on the flat portion and painful on the return grade is a clue, especially for spinal stenosis patterns and for hip pain.

A short trip that is still worth doing on purpose

From most of Laguna Niguel you reach La Alameda by Crown Valley Parkway or Alicia Parkway. About 8 miles, often 15 to 25 minutes outside the Crown Valley rush. The address is 26400 La Alameda, Suite 100, Mission Viejo, CA 92691. Park at the building. Hours are Monday through Thursday, 9 to 6. Being close is an advantage. It also makes it easy to treat the clinic like a drop-in chiropractic stop. That is not how this office works.

Book enough time for an exam, not a crack on the way to an errand. The complimentary 20-minute consultation exists so you can meet the doctors before a longer visit. Call (949) 312-1754. If you are coming from the south end of town near the 73, say so when you schedule. The return toward the toll road in the afternoon is the slow direction.

What we end up working on with Niguel patients

Hill neighborhoods send us knee pain, plantar fasciitis, and low back pain. Desk-plus-commute weeks send neck pain and headaches. Functional movement screening is a plain way to see which basic patterns are limited before they become an injury story. DNS-based exercise is one way we retrain trunk control when the hills expose it.

Parents in these neighborhoods also ask about energy, cycles, and digestion while they are in the car for everyone else's sports. Hormonal imbalance and gut health are separate problems with their own exams. Labs are chosen from the history. Start from the Laguna Niguel chiropractor page if you want the full local map.

Fees and the shape of follow-up

Out of network, superbill, HSA and FSA. Same policy as the rest of the county. We recheck findings instead of assuming a standing weekly visit. If you are better, the gap between visits should grow. If you are not, we change the plan or we say that someone else should see you.

Drs. Sani and Tara Kohen run the practice together. Read about them on the about page. The rooms, including the rehab space, are on the office page. No referral is required from a Laguna Niguel physician, and we will coordinate if you have one.

Questions patients ask

Do I need GI-MAP, a breath test, and a food panel?

Usually no. Each test answers a different question, and FRI picks from your history rather than dumping a panel on everyone. Stool testing looks at what is in the colon sample. Breath testing looks at fermentation related to the small intestine. A food sensitivity panel is another decision. You should know why a kit was chosen.

When should I see a gastroenterologist first?

Blood in the stool, black stool, trouble swallowing, persistent vomiting, or unintentional weight loss needs a physician, often a gastroenterologist, before a functional kit. Functional medicine at FRI does not replace that clinician, your primary physician, an endocrinologist, or a mental health clinician. Come here for the pattern that remains after urgent problems are ruled out, or alongside that care.

Can gut symptoms affect energy?

They can travel with fatigue, brain fog, and joint stiffness. That does not mean the gut is the only cause. Thyroid, sleep, mood, and medications are still on the list. FRI will say so. If a stool or breath test is used, it is to answer a digestion question you can describe, not to explain your entire health in one report.

Will you put me on a strict diet immediately?

No. A long forbidden-food list on day one is not the plan. Food changes, if any, come after the history and after the test that matches it. They are individualized and revisited. There is no brand protocol and no supplement dose on this page. Chiropractic Sports Medicine is separate care if pain, not digestion, is the main limit.
