Leaky Gut Treatment in San Clemente, CA

People say leaky gut when they mean the gut barrier might be letting more through than it should. The plainer name is intestinal permeability. Testing can explore that question. It cannot prove the barrier caused an autoimmune disease, and it is not the same workup as a breath test or a food panel. For patients coming from San Clemente, the office is about 16 miles away, 22–35 minutes, by I-5 north through San Juan Capistrano to Mission Viejo.

Intestinal permeability, in plain language

The lining of the intestine has a job: let nutrients across, and keep larger fragments and microbes on the inside of the tube. When that sorting gets sloppy, people call it leaky gut. FRI treats intestinal permeability as a question, not as a slogan that explains every symptom you have ever had.

You might notice bloating, food reactions that seem new, skin flares, or joint stiffness in the same season. Those clues can justify a look. They do not prove a porous gut, and they do not prove the gut created an autoimmune disease. Many autoimmune conditions have nothing to do with this mechanism.

Tight junctions are the seals between cells

Cells lining the intestine sit side by side. Tight junctions are the protein seals between them. When the seals are snug, traffic is selective. When they loosen, more material may cross. That is the idea behind the phrase you may already be using. It is a description of a barrier, not a diagnosis FRI stamps on day one.

Illness, some medications, heavy alcohol, and poorly digested food are among the stories people bring. Dr. Tara Kohen, D.C. and Dr. Sani Kohen, D.C. want that history before a kit. Functional Medicine does not open with a supplement stack aimed at junctions.

What a GI-MAP can and cannot prove

GI-MAP stool testing can describe organisms in the stool, signs of inflammation, and clues about digestion. Some reports include markers people associate with the barrier. None of that proves the lining is open, and none of it proves permeability caused your diagnosis.

A breath test asks a SIBO question. A food panel asks a sensitivity question. The gut health page explains why those are ordered separately. This visit stays on the barrier question. Food sensitivities are discussed only when reactions, not a theory, are in your history.

A different question from SIBO or a food list

Bloating an hour after carbohydrates points toward fermentation and belongs on the SIBO page. A single food that swells your lips is an allergy question for a physician. A vague sense that many foods now bother you might lead here, or it might lead to a simpler meal-timing problem. The history chooses.

Functional medicine at FRI does not replace a primary physician, endocrinologist, gastroenterologist, or mental health clinician. Nutrition and supplementation follows what the stool test and your symptoms support. There is no brand protocol, and sealing the gut is not described as the source of autoimmunity.

What to expect when you are seen for Leaky Gut

Book a complimentary 20-minute consultation if you want the barrier question sorted from the others. FRI is out of network. Superbills and HSA or FSA payment are available. Hours run Monday–Thursday, 9–6.

Expect a history of infections, medications, and which symptoms you think are gut-related. A stool test is not automatic. You will not be told that every autoimmune disease starts in the intestine.

Pier Bowl, Talega grades, and Trestles mornings

San Clemente has two terrains that matter clinically. The Pier Bowl, the beach trail, and the streets near the water are relatively level and sandy. Talega, Forster Ranch, and the newer hills are the opposite: repeated grades, youth sports, and a drive just to reach I-5. Surfing at Trestles and along the pier loads shoulders and low backs. Hill neighborhoods load knees on the way down and necks on the drive. We ask which part of town you live in because the home program has to match the grade outside.

A lot of San Clemente patients are trying to stay active while working north of here. The I-5 commute itself is a sitting test. If your low back or sciatica eases when you walk the beach trail and worsens in the car, that detail changes the exam. Tell us the direction of the commute and how long you sit, not only where it hurts.

Coming north on I-5 to the clinic

The drive is I-5 north through San Juan Capistrano into Mission Viejo, about 16 miles. Without a slowdown it is a little over 20 minutes. A backup through the Capistrano stretch pushes it toward 35. Exit for the La Alameda side of Mission Viejo and come to 26400 La Alameda, Suite 100, CA 92691. Parking is on site. The doors are open Monday through Thursday, 9 to 6.

Because the drive is simple, people sometimes stack a visit onto a day that already includes a surf and a commute. Say if that is the plan. We may want the exam before the surf, or we may want you to skip the session that morning so the tests mean something. Call (949) 312-1754 if you are sorting the order. The 20-minute consultation can be the first appointment if you are not ready for a full evaluation.

Services that match this coastline

Board sports and trail hills make shoulder, neck, and knee complaints ordinary reasons to come north. McKenzie-based spine care is a fit when back or leg pain has a clear directional preference. Corrective exercise is how a Talega hill gets written into the plan instead of fought with a generic core sheet.

Families also come for problems that are not sports. Thyroid, sleep, and migraine questions are evaluated with the limits those conditions require. A migraine plan does not replace a neurologist. A thyroid plan does not replace the prescriber. Read the city overview at the San Clemente chiropractor page.

Questions patients ask

Is leaky gut a diagnosis FRI makes?

People use that phrase, and FRI translates it into a question about intestinal permeability. A visit does not stamp leaky gut as a formal diagnosis that explains your whole chart. GI-MAP stool testing can add organism and inflammation clues. It cannot prove the barrier is open, and it cannot prove the gut caused an autoimmune disease.

Can a leaky gut cause every autoimmune disease?

No. FRI does not claim intestinal permeability causes every autoimmune disease, or even most of them. Some people with autoimmunity have gut symptoms worth testing. Many do not. If you have a diagnosed autoimmune condition, your rheumatologist or other specialist remains in charge. Gut testing is optional context, not proof of a single root cause.

How is this different from SIBO?

SIBO is about microbes fermenting in the small intestine, usually explored with a breath test. Permeability is about the barrier between the tube and the bloodstream, explored in part with stool clues that still cannot prove the lining is open. You can have one question without the other. FRI will not merge them into a single protocol.

Will one test give me a permanent food list?

No. A food sensitivity panel, if it is used at all, is not a lifelong ban list. It is discussed on its own page. Here the focus is the barrier question and what stool testing can actually show. Nutrition changes are individualized and revisited. Chiropractic Sports Medicine is unrelated to sealing a gut lining.
